Scale a recipe up or down by number of servings

The most common kitchen question is simple: the recipe serves 6, I need 45. Set the servings you need and every ingredient is recalculated from the original, never from a previously scaled copy.

Scale by servings

How the servings factor works

The factor is target servings divided by original servings. 45 ÷ 6 = 7.5×. Each linear ingredient is multiplied by 7.5; count items are rounded unless you choose fractions.

When servings aren't the right measure

For sauces, doughs and creams, a target weight is often more accurate than portions, because portion sizes change between menus. Switch to weight mode on the same recipe.

Cooking times don't multiply

A doubled stew does not need double the cooking time. Larger batches take longer to come to temperature, but the simmer time is usually similar. Use the recipe's timers as a guide and check doneness.
